How scoring works in 60 seconds

Four runs over two days. Lowest combined time wins. Like luge and bobsled, hundredths of seconds separate the field. The athlete's start time often predicts the final result.

If you're new to Skeleton

Skeleton is luge's more terrifying cousin: athletes go head-first on a tiny sled, face down, at 80+ mph. They steer with subtle shoulder and body movements. The start sprint is crucial — a fast push means a fast run.

Skeleton Schedule

Skeleton — the sport where athletes hurl themselves headfirst down an icy track at 80+ mph — runs at the Cortina Sliding Centre during the middle portion of the Games. Both men’s and women’s events are typically decided over four heats across two days.

Start times at the Cortina track are generally in the morning Italian time, translating to the 3:00–6:00 a.m. ET / 12:00–3:00 a.m. PT range. Each heat takes about an hour to complete for the full field.

Germany and Great Britain have been the skeleton standard-bearers in recent Games. The sport is mesmerizing to watch — the on-board camera angle is genuinely terrifying — and the margins are razor-thin. Combined times over four heats decide everything. One wobble on a curve can cost a medal.
