How scoring works in 60 seconds

Heats, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. First across the line advances (or wins). Penalties for impeding, pushing, or illegal lane changes can disqualify you — even after finishing first.

If you're new to Short Track Speed Skating

Short track is speed skating on a small oval (111m) with four to six skaters racing head-to-head. Contact, crashes, and last-second passes are common. Positioning and tactics matter as much as raw speed.

Short Track Speed Skating Schedule

Short track takes place at Milano Santa Giulia Arena — the same venue as figure skating — and the sessions are some of the most electric in the Winter Olympics. Competition spans both weeks, with heats and quarterfinals early on and finals packed into the second half.

Events cover distances from 500m to 1500m for individuals, plus relay races. Sessions are typically scheduled for the evening in Milan, which means afternoon ET (roughly 12:00–3:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. PT). This is prime viewing territory for American fans — no alarm clock required.

Short track is pure adrenaline: tight packs, constant passing, crashes, disqualifications, and photo finishes. South Korea, China, the Netherlands, and Canada are traditional powerhouses. The 500m events are over in less than a minute. Blink and you’ll miss a gold medal.
