How scoring works in 60 seconds

Four runs over two days (singles) or two runs in one day (doubles). Lowest combined time wins. Thousandths of seconds matter — the 2022 men's singles was decided by 0.097 seconds across four runs.

If you're new to Luge

Luge is the fastest event on ice — athletes lie on their back on a tiny sled and navigate an ice track using only subtle body movements. No steering mechanism, no brakes until the finish. Pure nerve.

Luge Schedule

Luge competition runs at the Cortina Sliding Centre during the first week of the Games, typically wrapping up before the midpoint. The program includes men’s singles, women’s singles, doubles, and the team relay — one of the most entertaining events in the entire Olympics.

Each singles event has four runs over two days. Doubles and team relay are faster affairs, decided in fewer runs. Start times at the Cortina track usually fall in the morning Italian time, putting them in the 3:00–6:00 a.m. ET / 12:00–3:00 a.m. PT range.

Germany has dominated Olympic luge for decades, but the Americans have shown they can compete for medals. The team relay — where men’s, women’s, and doubles sliders go down in quick succession, tagging off at the bottom — is a must-watch. It’s fast, loud, and over before you know it.
